CARLOS DONOSO

I write about wars that leave memory behind, machines that do not understand grief, and people who keep speaking names after the archive has marked them lost.

Author of A Memory of Iron, Book I of the Iron and Void Saga, now available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback. The novel reads as a whole; the saga keeps containing it. Also available in Spanish as La Semilla de Hierro.

[02] · About the author

Before the iron
there was a river,
a name and a letter.

My name is Carlos Donoso. I am from Cuenca, Ecuador. My first short story was written in 2018: Julian Matadero, a story shaped around the Tomebamba River and inspired by the birth of my son Julian Matias in April 2016.

Between 2018 and 2020 I wrote stories of different sizes: some brief, some deeper, some simple pieces made only to entertain. Part of that archive lived at cuentos-ecuador.com, a domain where I gathered those early stories. During that period I also wrote a dreamlike story about my bus trips to Quito.

Later I began writing letters to the people I loved: my parents, my wife, my son. Intimate, necessary letters, some born from distance; I have not been able to see my son since January 2025. Before and during all of this I also wrote technical articles, including pieces published in the Ecuadorian Army journal Revista Chasqui in 2014, and I maintained a help blog for developers and programmers that stayed online until April 2026.

I began La Semilla de Hierro, published in English as A Memory of Iron, in 2025 and finished it in May 2026. It is my first full-length novel: a self-contained story and Book I of the Iron and Void Saga, written with the idea of opening a sequel or series in the same universe.

I am not interested in epics that forget surnames. I am interested in epics that archive them with microsecond precision and respect them one by one.

[03] · Before the iron

A river,
a name,
and a story.

In 2018 I wrote a story about the Tomebamba River. It is the intimate origin of the Iron and Void Saga. I leave it here, in Spanish and English, so anyone can read it.

Primary piece · root of the universe

The Tomebamba River narrates its own history — its glacial birth, its baptism by a bishop into the name “Julián Matadero”, the wrath of April 3, 1950, its marriage to La Josefina, and a quiet wisdom that has lasted centuries. This is the seed of the Iron and Void Saga: the author's first short story, written in 2018, inspired by the birth of his son Julián Matías in April 2016.

“Millions of years ago, on what is now called Cajas National Park, the ice began to melt. Drop by drop, the water flowed down the mountain, and that is how I was born — because I am a river.”

Seven stories for our children

Seven brief, simple tales written the same year, for the author's two sons — ants that clean the school, a blind man counting steps on 5th Street, parrots that watch over abandoned pets, a seal that should not have lied. Early exercises kept openly available, not for craft, but for the record of where the writing began.

  • ~7,000 words
  • 7 short tales
  • PDF · A5

None of these texts belong to the Iron and Void Saga. They are here because without them the novel would not exist.

Those who gave
this universe
a body.

A novel is the work of one person; a book as object is the work of several. Here they are.
